Underdrain

What is an Underdrain

Definition of Underdrain in Construction

The term underdrain means any type of drain or drainage system that is installed under another construction element. An underdrain is identified as underneath some other construction element. An underdrain is normally installed to eliminate the access fluid that accumulates under a construction system, such as a floor slab, foundation, footing, or another element that could produce a fluid that requires drainage. Like many terms in the construction industry, the term underdrain is an overly used term, which could basically mean almost any type of mechanical means of draining a fluid from the bottom or under another construction element. Although properly referred to as a perimeter foundation drain, the drainage systems that are commonly installed along the exterior or the interior of a foundation wall will be described as an underdrain. The term must be clearly and concisely identified due to its numerous meanings and usage within the construction industry.
