The SPN which stands for standard plant names, are the names that were originally identified in the 1942 edition of the American Joint Committee on Horticulture. These established names are still used on the landscaping documents of today. Although plantings have been improved and are more durable as well as disease and pest resistant, the names are still used to describe the actual plantings. The landscape documents will identify the locations and the types of plantings required to comply with the Landscape architects design, and the SPN (standard plant names) will still be used.
