Sound transmission rating. This is a rating system pertaining to sound transmission, that is used to control and establish noise ratings and limits, within structural systems, window systems, or other partition elements, between occupied spaces. The STR of a glazing system for example, especially if the project is along a heavily traveled highway, is extremely important. The privacy requirements within individual offices within a private bank for example, require a strong concern for the sound transmission between offices. Courthouses have extremely detailed and stringent sound requirements as do recording studios, teaching facilities and research establishments. The STR of a material, is a critical element of a construction system, and the engineering to establish new and better STR ratings is constantly being introduced. Spray foam insulation is an element of construction that has been developing, and one of its strong parameters is its ability to reduce sound transmission. Sound contamination is a growing concern as residential developments are being constructed within the inner cities. The STR ratings within apartments and multi unit buildings is an important concern that architects and engineers are taking very seriously.
