What is R Value?
Definition of R Value in Construction
This is the insulation rating of a system, whether it is the wall, floor, ceiling, roof, etc.
It is the transmission of heat or cold ( temperature ) thru a system. The R value is based upon a heat and cooling evaluation of the systems involved. The R value of a building component determines the energy efficiency of the structure and the BTU losses of the structure. R values have a very significant bearing on the overall design of the mechanical systems installed within the structure. Technology and research has increased the efficiency of insulation and building components to provide larger R values with less actual building materials. Synthetic foams and sprays are now being used to increase the R value in homes as well as commercial and industrial applications. Increasing the overall R value of a structure saves in energy costs as well as increases the comfort within the structure due to a decrease in major temperature swings.
