Primary Electric

What is Primary Electric

Definition of Primary Electric in Construction

There are two distinct electrical services that are normally identified, regarding the electrical component of a construction project. These two distinct services are called the primary electric and the secondary electric. There are other specialized services, such as an emergency service, that could be involved on a construction project, dependent upon the electrical design of the project. The primary electric, is the electrical power that is offered by the local utility company to the project. This primary electric is usually located underground in the adjacent street or electrical easement, or overhead in the primary wires that are strung between poles, usually on the adjacent highway. The utility company will indicate the type of primary electrical power that is available for the project. The electrical engineer assigned to the project will design the primary and secondary electrical services to provide the required electrical service distribution for the construction project. The primary electric is normally provided directly into the main electrical room which is located within the construction project. The primary power is terminated within the primary switchgear located in the electrical room of the project. From this point the primary power is distributed to the secondary switchgear, also located within the electrical room. Primary electric is the initial electrical power provided by the utility companies, this power is reduced to comply with the electrical design requirements of the project.
