Mortise Hinge

What is a Mortise Hinge?

Definition of Mortise Hinge in Construction
A mortise hinge is a hinge that is cut into the wood, vinyl, aluminum or other synthetic material that makes up the sides of the jamb and the door or window. To mortise a hinge normally requires a template that marks the location of the mortises perfectly. The hinge is mounted within this mortise to allow the actual hinge to be flush with the surface of the door or jamb frame. It is important that the mortise be cut properly to allow the proper functioning of the hinge and the resultant joint.
