What is Moment Diagram?
Definition of Moment Diagram in Construction
A diagram that illustrates the amount of moment force on a beam, allowing for the proper engineering of that beam, or other structural component.
The moment diagram is a computerized generation of the resultant loading on a structural component. The calculations of moment diagrams prior to computers was all done by hand with calculators, and before that, in long hand. Today’s computers will generate and entire model of moment diagrams for every beam and column on the project. In addition the analysis of the joints, connections and sizing of the components is computer generated. A moment diagram looks like a diagram with the most moment force at the two ends of a beam connection, and no moment in the center of the span. The study of the resultant moment on a system is invaluable to the proper engineering of the entire system.
