Merit

What is Merit

Definition of Merit in Construction

The term merit will normally describe a non-union contractor on a construction project. Although the terminology is quite dated, the term is still used on projects to identify any association with the development of skills and construction knowledge, by any other means, than the union contractor. The merit contractor will attempt to compete with the union contractors on projects and will identify their manpower as professionals that have been trained and educated in a similar fashion as the more sophisticated and tenured union contractor. The popularity of a merit contractor is becoming more popular, especially when developers are attempting to save money and eliminate the stringent regulations and payroll policies of the typical union contractor.
