Definition of Keel in Construction

The term keel is used in construction to mean a carpenters marking tool, very similar to a heavy crayon. The term is universally used by carpenters, laying out partitions, concrete form workers, marking the formwork, iron workers when they mark the proper separation of reinforcing bar, and countless other trades that are marking dimensions, layouts, etc. on construction projects. A keel is used to mark the pile to identify the one foot markings on the sides of the pile, prior to it being driven into the ground. Keel is an old Scottish word, which was used to identify a type of iron ore, which was also used to make markings on various materials. Keel is a very commonly used term and can also mean any marking tool that is common on the project.
