An ironworker is the tradesman that assembles structural steel, miscellaneous metal or reinforcing bar on a construction project.
In most cases, the ironworker is one of the highest paid labor positions on the construction project, and due to the danger and importance of the trade, highly respected. In many areas of the country ( New York City ) for example, the ironworker is truly the king of the project site, especially when the structural steel frame is being erected. Ironworkers scope of work includes the installation of rebar for reinforced concrete construction, the erection of structural steel, as well as the installation of smaller items, known as miscellaneous metal. An experienced ironworker has gone through a sophisticated apprenticeship program and will grow in the trade gaining experience.
