What is Index
Definition of Index in Construction
The term index is used in construction, for any type of specialized rating system that has been developed to compare various materials performance characteristics for heat retention, cold penetration, insulating values, noise transmission, friction losses, compaction capabilities, etc. There are indexes for nearly all material characteristics for construction products in the industry. In addition, the term index is used, for descriptive lists that are required to be mounted within the interior panel doors of both primary and secondary, lighting and power panels. These indexes are important for safety and maintenance reasons, due to their description of what each circuit breaker or switch controls. In addition indexes are used to establish maintenance data on mechanical and electrical equipment, or to keep records of the replacement of components, filters or other items requiring periodic replacement within structures.
