Halyard

What is Halyard?

Definition of Halyard in Construction
The term used for the apparatus that secures a workers fall protection to the safety line attached.

A halyard usually has the capability of extending the line with an ever increasing tension that will eventually stop the fall of an individual without producing such an abrupt jerk as to cause injury to the worker. The use of the halyard and harness has been updated by OSHA as well as new up to date safety programs. In many high rise applications, the halyard has become daily piece of PPE ( personal protection equipment ). Improvements in the halyard system as well as fall protection harnesses has reduced the amount of injuries caused by these pieces of equipment. To fall and be caught by the halyard system still remains a traumatic hazard, however improvements have softened the landings and their use has saved many lives.
