The detailing at the soffit and top of a structure, along the horizontal intersecting surfaces of the wall, abutting an overhang or soffit.
Dentil work has a broad identification and is used by architects and designers in many different way. However, any detailing on the facade of a building that is repeated in a fashion could be identified as dentil work. The strict definition, is the successive blocks of wood, masonry, etc. that run horizontally along the upper portion of a vertical wall at the soffit elevation. Dentil work is also referenced in the interior trim details of colonial and period homes. Any ornate interior trim work that may resemble blocks of repeated design can be referred to as dentil work.
