Creosote

What does Creosote Mean?

Definition of Creosote in Construction
Creosote is the residue from burning material that collects within the interior surface of a flue pipe. Wood burning fireplaces and wood burning stoves create substantial creosote, and it is important to clean the interior of flue pipes to prevent creosote build-up. Failure to keep the interior of flue pipes free of creosote could cause a fire to develop within the flue, causing a chimney fire. Creosote is extremely flammable and sticky, the build-up of creosote can be extremely serious, especially if the flues within the chimney are compromised by cracks or separation.
