The common nail is the most widely used construction fastener. The nail has been in existence ever since the discovery of iron and the ability to transform the iron, by heating, into small narrow pieces , that could be driven into a wood framing member. The manufacture of nails has advanced beyond the original technique, however the actual result is basically the same concept. Common nails are available in a variety of shapes and materials dependent upon the application. The size of the nail is determined by a number and the higher the number the larger the nail. The length of the nail is based on an inch dimension and are available in a variety of different lengths. There are finish nails, common nails with the larger heads, duplex nails for ease in removal, cut nails for an old fashion look, etc.
