What does Cable Elevator Mean?
Definition of Cable Elevator in Construction
Elevator that is operated with the use of cables, normally pulled up from an elevator machine room, located above the elevator shaft. Commonly the power is supplied by an electric motor that is both tied into the primary electrical system as well as the emergency power system. Cable elevators are used on most high rise structures. The use of a cable elevator can service several floors, however the increased length of the cable adds substantial weight to the system. As the cable gets longer, the weight increases and the power requirements become greater. Cable development has advanced to levels that use special materials to reduce weight and stretch of long cables. Carbon fiber cables are being developed that allow super high structures to be serviced by cable elevators.
