What are Butts?
Definition of Butts in Construction Another term for door or window hinges. The term is basically a slang expression that has been carried forward from the commercial end of the construction business. There are several different types of hinges and butts, however, they are normally referred to as the hinge that is mortised into a door and frame that has two rectangular sides and a common pin, attaching the two rectangular sides together. This common pin can be normally removed to allow the easy separation of the door from the door frame. These types of hinges are normally installed in multiple number dependent upon the size and weight of the door. In some smaller, light, hollow core doors, the use of a simply two hinge installation is adequate, however on larger, heavy commercial doors, four or more butt hinges may be used to properly support the swing of the door without the door buckling or shifting in the frame
