Definition of Blocking in Construction
This is a general term, that refers to any backup material, or device, that is used to backup an installation on the surface of a wall, ceiling or floor. Blocking can be metal, wood, synthetic material or even special blocking devices, that are specifically designed to ensure proper support, of whatever item is being secured to the wall, ceiling or floor surfaces. In many instances, a full piece of plywood is installed between the wall studs to ensure that the entire wall has blocking. The blocking layout is important when installing heavy shelving, kitchen cabinets, mechanical or electrical equipment on the walls, ceilings, or floors. It is important the when framing a structure , the blocking scheme is clearly established and laid out. To install blocking after the fact, is much more costly and time consuming than the proper installation of the blocking while the framing is open.
