What is Benchmark?

Definition of Benchmark in Construction
The benchmark on a project is a designated elevation that establishes a control of the elevation on a project. A professional surveyor is normally employed to establish the benchmark on the project and the accuracy of this elevation is extremely important to the success of the project. An improperly installed benchmark could cause substantial layout difficulties and result in the entire project being either too high or too low. Most construction projects will have the benchmark elevation located in a number of areas around the project. This will enable the surveyors on the project to check the accuracy of the benchmark they are using by checking with one or more of the others, located around the site.
