What are Balances?
Definition of Balances in Construction Any mechanism assembled within the interior of the window frame sides ( jambs ) to facilitate and assist in the opening and closing of the window sashes. Original window balances consisted of heavy weights and actual rope, to assist the operation of the window sash. The term comes from the balancing effect of the weight of the jamb weights and the actual window sashes. The proper functioning of a window is in many cases the result of a properly balanced window. The corresponding mechanisms that assist the opening of the window are properly weighted and smoothly operate within the framework of the window. In most instances, balances are only found in double and single hung windows. Older balances were simply heavy metal weights. Research and design advancements, have produced synthetic weighted balances as well as different tracking systems and cables to produce balances that are extremely efficient and easy to operate.
