Piece of equipment that is used as a means of starting a mechanical or electrical process. An actuator can be a mechanical lever, rotating cam or an electronic device that starts the process. Many times the term is used as a universal identification of an element that will trigger an event. In construction this term is also used in the definition of individuals or companies that may cause a reaction to occur, for good or for bad. With the advancement of digital equipment and processes, an electronic actuator is commonly referred to.
